Who we are
In 2008, Silverton famously became the first town in the country to elect an openly transgender mayor. We’re reaching out to share a special new project that has the potential to put Silverton on the map again. Now, we want to memorialize that mayor, Stu Rasmussen, with a life sized Bronze Statue to be placed in the center of the town.
Stu loved Silverton. He thought it was the “Coolest Town on the Planet.” We think so, too. (https://ourtownlive.com/ourtown/?p=219)
Wouldn’t it be cool to erect a statue memorializing Stu here in Silverton?
Here’s the artist’s initial rendering
At a time when the United States is at a divisive tipping point, the LGBTQIA+ community - especially the Trans community - has been targeted by politicians, lawmakers and hate groups. There is increasing verbal and physical violence toward this group. They are trying to put people back into the closet.
By electing Stu in 2008, Silverton distinguished itself as a town where everyone can be who they authentically are. By erecting a statue of Stu now, Silverton can proudly proclaim, we decry the targeting of Trans people and we embrace the dignity of all people. That’s what this statue will stand for.
We are seeking your donations to bring this important project to the city of Silverton. A group of Silverton citizens are donating their time, energy and expertise to bring this project to life. We estimate 95+% of contributions will go toward the creation, placement, and maintenance of the Statue. The current estimated cost is $175,000.
